Additional information contraindications
1. Pregnancy, breastfeeding
Laser hair removal treatment is not harmful during pregnancy, as the light will penetrate the skin no more than 4.5 millimeter (the area of the hair root). It can never reach the ovaries or whomb.
However:
- During pregnancy or breastfeeding the hormone levels in the body have changed, and so the effects of the treatement may not be clear. Perhaps the amount of hair growth is higher or lower than usual, and in this case the treatment we conduct would be too severe or too weak.
- During pregnancy the skin may be more sensitive to light, comparative to a sun allergy: red itchy bumps and/or the production of extra pigment, which will happen mostly on the face. It’s not dangerous, but also not pleasant.
- We never wish to be put in a position where we have to defend ourselves if coincidental pregnancy complications occur. The treatment does not impose any danger to a pregnant woman and her baby, however, you or your friends/family might make a mental connection between the two.
Moreover, the prickling sensations associated with treatment can be quite painful and cause stress in the body. We believe that this is not beneficial for the pregnancy and the development of the baby. Stress hormones can affect the foetus.
Also, if you wish to become pregnant, it is possible that you are not yet aware of your pregnancy during the first weeks. Please let us know if you are trying to get pregnant. In this case, we will only treat you during or right after your mesnstrual period, when we know that you can not be pregnant.
2. A young person who is not yet fully grown
Girls, however, can receive treatment earlier when they have had their menstrual period for at least one year. Boys can receive treatment once they are as tall or taller than their parents. Each case will be assessed and permission of the parents or legal guardian is required when the client is underage.
However, treatment might not be very effective, since the body produces many new hairs during puberty. In a way, it will be fighting a running battle. Starting treatment too early can cause dissapointing results, especially when hair is still very thin. If young females do have thick hair growth out of every pore, the effect can be quite satisfying. Where young males are concerned, the hair will most likely be stubborn and grow back. For them treatment would only be satisfying when a short-term effect is desired, for example, for a certain event or a vacation.
3. Keloid
A keloid is an area of irregular fibrous tissue formed at the site of a scar or injury. We will not be able to treat you if your skin has keloid tendencies.
4. Received cancer treatment less than 5 years ago
ATTENTION: Hair removal treatment does not cause cancer.
However, conventional cancer treatment can cause the skin to be over sensitive to laser treatment. The body will be in a state of distress after receiving chemo therapy and/or radiation and/or surgery. During this time, the body will need all its energy to focus on healing, we do not want to interfere by causing extra stress to the body.
A person that has been declared cancer-free will only be treated with the written permission of his/her oncologist. We are very sorry, but will absolutely not start treatment without this written permission. We never wish to be put in a position where we have to defend ourselves if the cancer coincidentally returns. You or your loved ones might make a (subconscious) assosiation.
5. Certain medications
Certain medications and herbal preparations cause the skin to be over sensitive to daylight, thus the skin will also be over sensitive to the light (590-980nm) used in laser treatment. Please read the information leaflet of your medication carefully, or if you do not posess a leaflet, go to www.drugs.com/drug_information. Over sensitivity to light can occur, amongst others, when using the following medications or creams:
- Medications for acne (Ro-accutane, Iso-tretoine/Vitamin A cream, etc.)
- Medications for anxiety, stress and depression (Antidepressants)
- Herbal preparations for depression (St John’s-wort, Hypericum, etc.)
- Antibiotics or pennicilin
However, exceptions may be made when you have been using a certain medication for years without ever having noticed over sensitivity to light; never have had sun allergies (itchyness, red bumps) en never have to squint your eyes during normal daylight. We will then carefully conduct a test to monitor the way your skin responds to treatment. If this is possitive, we can treat areas that are never exposed to sunlight, for example an armpit.
6. Diabetes
When having diabetes, the recovery process after laser treatment will be more difficult, thus blistering can occur. This won’t be permanent, but it will be unpleasant. Some people might not be aware that they have an early stage of diabetes, hence we will ask you whether or not diabetes occurs in your family.
7. Medications that influence the nervous system
These are the type of medications that prohibit you from operating a vehicle. People using this medication may not be able to give proper feedback about the sensations they feel during treatment, so we will be extra careful.
8. Herpes infection, for example cold sores or shingles on the torso
We will wait 3 weeks to treat you after the symptoms have dissapeared.
9. Hypertrichosis or hirsutism
When a female suffers from excessive hair growth in a normal pattern (hypertrichosis) or excessive hair growth in a male pattern (hirsutism), we would like you to first consult your doctor / dermatologist / gynecologist / endocrinologist.
It is recommended to consult your doctor first, since there might be an underlying cause to this problem. If not, we might be fighting an ungoing battle.
