Imporant:
It is imporant to take several things into consideration after treatment:
No sun or solarium for four weeks
It is important not to expose your skin to direct sunlight or a solarium for four weeks after treatment. Your skin will be extra sensitive to light after laser treatment and will produce an excessive amount of pigment that appears as stains or spots. Also, it is possible that a sun allergy will develop (itchy red bumps). This won’t be permanent, but it is not pleasant either. You can prevent these side-effects by staying out of the sun and/or covering the area with sufficient layers of clothing. Four weeks after treatment, you can gradually start exposing your skin to the sun again.
If your face has been treated, then it’s important to protect the skin by wearing a hat or applying sunscreen. Read the label on your sunscreen carefully to be sure that it protects both for UV-B and UV-A. Some older types of sunscreens that can be found in a health food store (containing zink oxide and titanium oxide), will offer this protection. Modern sunscreens that advertise using words as ‘nanotechnology’ and ‘chemical filters’ will usually not protect against both kinds of UV radiation.
No use of deodorant
When treating the armpits, deodorant can not be used for 24 hours after. The treatment will cause the pores in your skin to open up. It is advisable to wait until the pores gotten smaller before using deodorant. One client told us about experiencing pain even a week after treatment! We recommend you to be extra careful.
No sauna for three days
After treatment, you are not allowed to go to the sauna for three days. NOTE: When being at the sauna/spa more than three days after your treatment, be sure not to use the solarium (a waiting period of 4 weeks is required). Infrared is allowed, but preferably an infrared cabin without lamps.
No self tanning lotion for two days
You may not use self tanning lotion for two days after your treatment. When redness persists on the skin after these two days, you can start using it after the redness has completely disappeared.
Tip: If you do like to have some colour on your skin, use the ‘liquid coloured day cream’ by Dr. Hauschka. Available for sale at Briez. This cream will give you a beautiful healthy tint.
No intensive sports
For the first days after treatment, you are allowed to move and practice light sports, but be sure not to overdo it. Your skin still needs to loose heath, so when generating heath by sports your skin can remain red and sensitive for a longer time.
Will people be able to smell something right after treatment?
No smell will remain, we will remove the contact gel and some scorched hairs after the treatment and wash your skin. Then we will apply an after-sun cream with a fresh and citrus-like scent. You can continue with all your normal daily activities right after treatment. Some redness on the skin may remain, which will be visible if we treated an area that will not be covered by clothing. Hence, many clients schedule an appointment for the face or neck in the evening or on a day off.
Response of the skin to treatment
When treating thick hair the skin will respond right away with ‘red goosebumps’. If the hair is thinner, then some redness on the skin will appear right away. The scientific name of this phenomenon is perifollicular edema and erythema. It occurs when the body receives a signal of elimination of the hair follicle. This will usually disappear after a few hours. If the hairs were very thick then it may stay longer.
In the first two weeks after the test your hair will most likely grow as usual. This is normal. You can keep shaving. In the third week it is best to stop shaving, so you can see the results. In comparison with the untreated side, there should be a noticeable difference. Positive results are:
- Hair stopped growing or it grows slowly
- Hair might keep growing to approximately 4 millimeters and then start falling out
- A thinned hair growth right away
- Irregular hair growth, bald spots start appearing
- After a bald period darker and more hair appears
This last result may scare you. You could think that the treatment caused more hair growth. However, this phenomenon can be explained by the fact that all the hairs that would usually appear in stages are now growing simultaneously. The treatment has brought all the hairs into the end phase of their life-cycle and extracted them. These hairs will appear darker and fuller. We call it the synchronicity-effect and are pleased with this result. If we then perform treatment while they are in their most vulnerable state, the results will be spectacular.
It is normal to still see new hair appear 6-8 weeks after treatment. If this causes you to be in doubt about the effectiveness of our methods, you are welcome for another test to monitor the cumulative effect.
Should you wish not to continue with your treatment trajectory, then there is no need to be worried. Approximately 15 – 25 % of hair will be eliminated after the first treatment. However, this will not be noticeable after a while and the treated side will look the same again as the untreated side.
Doubts about the effectiveness
Please do contact us if you are in doubt about the effectiveness of our treatment. We can answer your questions and perhaps reassure you, can evaluate the situation, conduct an extra test or perhaps use another method of treatment. Results differ each time and on each area of your body.
Sometimes tufts of hair may remain after treatment. Perhaps we accidentally skipped an area, though it is unusual. This will be undone during the next treatment. Fortunately, our prices are based on surface area treated, thus, you have not been charged for any area that we may have skipped. If the tufts of hair bother you, then you may come back for a repair-treatment five weeks after the initial treatment, for a reduced price of 35 euros per 15 minutes.
Streakiness: the zebra-effect
This effect is more common following IPL than following Laser treatment. Laser light is concentrated and unscattered, when using a long pulse-time every hair underneath the laser-head can be eliminated. When treating a thick beard, for example, the steps need to be bigger for the skin not to absorb too much heath. This can cause some streakiness that will gradually disappear.
Black spots
The heath used during treatment will cause stubbles to turn to powder. It may seem like there are blackheads on your skin (comedones). This is not harmful and will disappear gradually. Scrubbing might help.
Stubbles
Stubbles will gradually go away, try not to pick them. Three weeks after treatment they will most likely start to fall out. If hairs are very loose you may pull them out, but this is not necessary. You may shave as usual.
Changes in armpit odor (after treating armpits)
You may experience less bacterial growth since there is less surface for the bacteria to attach to. Your own body scent will become more prevalent, this is most likely better than bacterial growth. It could, however, cause a more moist feeling, since there is less surface for the perspiration to evaporate.
